Week 9:
We’ve tackled a full week of design planning in parallel with demo. And we have our Tesla / Solar City plans underway!
Solar City / Tesla Powerwall
We have had our Tesla Powerwall on reserve for a few months now, but it looks like we might be able to install solar panels before we get the Powerwall. Great!
Since our Eichler has a foam roof, we were concerned that a solar installer wouldn’t touch it for fear of puncturing the foam membrane. It turns out that we will have to take off the entire roof anyway, to run new electrical and install new skylights. So while we’ve got the roof off, our architect suggested we build a steel frame bolted to the structure so that we can fit and install solar panels. Great solution!
And here’s the quote from Tesla Solar City. Based on our square footage and sun exposure, we can power our home and charge our Tesla with a 4.55 kW system. That’s about 14 solar panels and we can expand to more panels in the future, if needed. With their estimate, our PG&E electric bill will be about $10 per month, or ~$120 a year. Crazy!
Initial Master Suite & Bedrooms Plans:
Shervin from etA Marin shared initial plans for reworking the north wing of the house, which houses all the bedrooms and bathrooms.
We are leaning towards a complete rework of the master en suite including carving out a proper closet from the bedroom next door. Luckily the other 3 bedrooms only need a little bit of work. He has drawn in the conversion of the 4th bedroom into an office that opens up into the courtyard. Awesome!

Henrybuilt Design Phase 1:
It’s been tricky moving the kitchen design forward in parallel with the full house plans, and we are learning a lot. Henrybuilt mocked up a design plan for the kitchen and “library” space. Below are the Design Phase 1 renderings and elevation drawings. One big change we made right away is to extend the length of the kitchen island to about 10 ft wide and to change the size of the window to be more horizontal (widescreen) vs. square.
