Modern Eichler Remodel: Week 13

Week 13:

Tesla Solar Site Visit

Tesla Solar (Solar City) finally completed the formal site survey this weekend. Within a few days, we received a full design plan, with permit drawings, elevations, and solar product specs. It was 14 pages of overwhelming engineering drawings, that I’m still trying to process. The net is that we will have 8 solar panels over the master bedroom, producing a 4.55 kWh system to run our whole house. Luckily, our architect is working closely with Tesla to make sure the design plan is in order.

Asbestos Results

Good news and bad news. Bad news first, right? We do indeed have high levels of asbestos (8%) in the original flooring and mastic (adhesive layer) throughout the entire house. There are also traces in some of the plaster walls and of all things, in the water heater and boiler pipes.

The sampled materials that exceeded the EPA level of 1% and/or the Cal-OSHA level of 0.1%  (Chrysotile) were:

  • Drywall & Mud Composition 2%
  • Drywall Mud 2%
  • Vinyl Composition Tile 8%
  • Vinyl Floor Mastic 8%
  • Transite Vent Pipe 8%

Good news…We don’t have asbestos on our roof, insulation or exterior walls. We’ve yet to get an estimate for the full bio-hazard removal so we are crossing our fingers that it won’t be obscene.

Office and Network Plan

While waiting to resume demo, David put together a plan for our wifi network and office wiring to help inform the electrical plans. Take a look!

Hopefully next week we’ll have final kitchen drawings and an update on the asbestos removal…
