Modern Eichler Remodel: Week 32

January 27, 2019

While we wait for planning permit feedback from the county, we’ve been taking on more design work to keep us busy. This week was drought tolerant plant research for the backyard.

Our hunt led us to Jungle Bamboo and Palm Nursery… yes, this does exist. In the Sonoma coastal region, just west of Sonoma Valley, this amazing farm and nursery has almost every species of bamboo and palm you can imagine. And some of the plants are 25 ft tall! We had a blast speaking with the owner and learning all about the pros / cons of bamboo and finding the best species for our Eichler.

Midori Green Bamboo – max height 15 ft

*note – bamboo can be very evasive, so make sure you are planting clumbing bamboo and not a “runner”

Mexican Blue Fan Palm – max height 20ft

Mediterranean Fan Palm – max height 10ft

And here’s David’s cute sketch of the backyard fence with bamboo and palms.
