DIY : Air Plants Vase

February 18, 2016

Air plants. Genius.

For someone who notoriously kills off plants one by one, the introduction to air plants has restored my faith. Perhaps I can keep these little guys alive after all…

It’s quite simple, so I’ll get right to the details. Find some materials that go with the general color, tone, decor of your home and then assemble!

Pro tip : layer the smallest grain material first, and then the pebbles or rocks on top. If you place your air plant on top of very fine sand, you’ll end up with a mess each time you remove the plant for watering.

Oh yes, and watering… here’s another tip for all the non-green thumbers out there. I take my air plants out of their adorable vases once a week for watering.

How to care for air plants:
  • airplant_2Using a bowl or shallow container, submerge the air plant in fresh water and let sit for 15 minutes
  • Shake off the excess water and let sit on a towel for a few minutes
  • Place the air plant back in your vessel and enjoy!
What you need:
  • Glass jar, vase, stemless wine glass, terrarium, etc.
  • White or colored sand
  • Small decorative pebbles or stones
  • Air plants of your choice
Where to find the things that you need:

Air plants:

  • Check your local nursery first. I found a great variety at Cactus Jungle in Berkeley
  • West Elm ↠ some locations have been selling air plants as part of their home decor. tip: make sure you examine the plants before buying, to ensure it’s as healthy and green as possible
  • Fake it – if you come up empty handed with a live air plant, I’ve seen some plastic varieties at your local hobby stores and even at CostPlus World Market

Sand, rocks, pebbles:

  • Look around first, you may stumble across these materials in your natural element… Or perhaps “borrow” some from your neighbor’s yard
  • Craft Stores – If snooping around the ‘hood doesn’t yield any rewards, make a quick trip to your local craft store. I found some good options at Michaels ↠ and JoAnn Fabric & Crafts ↠.
Have everything you need?

If you need help finding the bits mentioned above, try grabbing a few things from Amazon.com ↠

Go forth and be green!
