Week 12:
The ups and downs of renovations…we finished demo on the kitchen and garage, but have a potential asbestos issue.
Demo Round 2
We were lucky to have my Dad fly back to the bay to help us with demo weekend #2. Thanks Dad! ❤️
On the list this weekend was finishing demo in the kitchen, so we can remove the sink, dishwasher, and fridge. Plus removing the wall between the kitchen and laundry room.
David and Dad ripped through old cabinets in the spider-infested garage which I greatly appreciated. Don’t worry, while they were tackling the garage I was pulling up cork flooring in the laundry room.
The removal of the pantry and laundry room wall meant we got a first glimpse into the expanded kitchen space. Wow, what a difference!
And here’s the latest debris pile…
Asbestos Concerns:
We were able to remove the kitchen tile and laundry room flooring without a problem, but when we started peeling back floors in the north wing of the house, we found some issues.
The original Eichler linoleum tile was still hiding under two layers of flooring, which was indeed a surprise. David started researching the flooring and read a few articles saying this particular flooring may contain asbestos. Yikes.
So we stopped work on the flooring and moved to removing the wood paneling. Not long after we found the termite damage on the exterior kitchen wall, we started removing all the fiberglas insulations – which then also became a potential asbestos hazard.
To be safe, we paused work on these areas and are now waiting for an Asbestos Abatement team to come in for testing. More to come on that topic soon.

Oh my God!!! So sorry that you ran into these issues! But better finding them now. Doesn’t make it less sucky in the meantime though :-/
